Ok I have an 86 and the vats is disabled. I went to my local hardware store too get a copy made and after explaining I have the chip disabled and just wanted a normal copy. The kid made me a copy and it didn't work, but neither did the, door key or house key he made for me, so he's just a moron. But before I go to another place I thought I'd ask because I was pretty sure you could get a normal copy with it disabled.

It needs to be done on a "resistance" key only because of the reach. You're not concerned with the resistance - only the depth of the cuts should interest you. Are the keys that you have extremely worn? It would be maybe wise to have someone that is familiar with the depths to "read" the key and do the cuts manually.
If you went to a locksmith you could ask him to do it on a "work-key" first to confirm that it's going to work.
What do you mean by "didn't work"? Does that mean you can't turn the ignition cylinder? Or the ignition cylinder turns but the lights don't come on and the engine won't start?
It didn't turn and when I told him he thought maybe it was because it needed the pellet for some tumbler or something. I often want some odd/unusual part and have too explain myself. Most people can't grasp what I'm trying too do and I try too keep it simple and not argue or you can waste a lot of time and still not get what you want. I mostly walk off and they think I'm crazy, I'll go someplace else and get what I want.

The cheapest place to get the vats keys is on ebay, about $10.00 each.. I have a vats bypass on my ignition and I can even use the key blank that came with the new cylinder to start the car now.. Like WVZR-1 said, the keys are a different length.....WW
Ok I bought a $8.00 key off ebay and I just took it today too another hardware store. Ace was the first store I went to with the dumb kid and this was a Gill-Roy's. They had chip keys in stock for $20 and they had chip-less keys that would work for $1.79. I had him show me the keys and you could see the chip-less key was about 1/16" shorter from the key-head. So when I got home I put my orig key in the ignition and you can see it had about 1/16" of silver metal showing and those chip-less keys would work. For $1.79 I should have gotten one made just too make sure, I just was in a hurry and picking up another stuff.
Basically if they can't make you a chip-less copy, go someplace else!
