I have an 84 and the digital rpm guage doesn't show anything driving.
i have 2 digital clusters and i have tried both. everything else works and when I start the car the tach rpm display works and shows all the bars good. only after the initial start up nothing in the rpm works. I saw a post that said there is a filter in the dist.? next step? I hate these digital dashs!!
THAT digital dash is what made your car unique ! they are rare...and the 1st of the newest hi-tech gadgets that came from that....more accurate, more info, easier to read.
Very "state of the art" in the 80's.
If you are equipped to DIY, you can go to BATEE.COM to get the info on how-to. The clusters DO require simple maint after 25 yrs....its just more delicate than other things. READ and HEED all warnings about working on clusters!
the tach filter (condenser) is inside the dist cap . Never hurts to pull the dist and clean it all. Be sure to apply heat-grease under the ign module after cleaning. Thick wad of heat sink grease.
Thanks for the reply.. I will try to clean up that area and see what happens. I know what you mean about the unique dash but.. I was unique in 84 too...then I evolved!! lol. just messing . I have 2 cluster now, but I am probably going to switch to regular guages down the road. the car is a toy for autox and hopefully road racing. It was built the month and year I graduated high school and I fell in love with the 84 when it came out. Thanks,

Could a dirty filter cause the numbers on the tach to be unraedable. My bar graph works but the numbers are gone.

probably not. That's most likely the dirty LCD panel contacts.
if you feel comfortable messing with some fragile and expensive LCD parts...then go to bate.com and there you will get detailed instruction on "how to" fix this simple yet very common problem. The glass panels have micro-contacts that get dirty and must be cleaned. be forewarned though.....it is EASY to screw up in there and cost yourself a couple hundred to get a replacement panel....!
