Default PFZ Brake Pads - Question

Today, I went to the Auto Zone to purchase a set of Performance Friction
Z rated brake pads for my '93 Corvette. What they wanted to sell me was
a set of Performance Friction Carbon Metalliac pads. I indicated that I wanted the Z rated pads. The manager came over & stated that the
Carbon Metalliac pads & the Z rated pads are the same. Is this true?

They also told me that they did not stock the PFZ brake fluid.

Auto Zone carries two different Performance friction pads. The Z-rated ones are expensive, and say Z-rated on the box.

412Z is the Z-rated part number you are looking for

They no longer carry the PFZ brake fluid either. It doesn't sell. Most people that shop at discount parts stores want $.79 brake fluid and $9.99 brake pads.

I thought so. The 412 part number sounds right (from memory) but the box
did NOT say Z-rated on it. I passed & walked out. Do you know the part number for the rears?

Too bad about the fluid. The parts guy tried to sell me the cheap stuff.
As I said, I passed & walked out. I'll try another Auto Zone tomorrow.

I am about 95% sure the rear number is 413Z.

I do know that there was a misprint in the last PF catalog and if they pull it up on the computer, they will sell you the wrong rear pads. This really isn't their fault. They keyed the number in the computer that was in the catalog that PF printed.

The rears are very small, all 4 pads are identical except the wear indicators, they all have a little mettal "spring" at the top, and they don't have any holes in them anywhere. Ask for a set of 413Zs, and that should be right.

I am 100% sure on the front 412Z number. I have a spare set in the closet and I checked it.

If 413Z isn't the right rear number, ask for a set of rear pads for a '96 Z28 with rear discs. They are the same. My '91 Z28 also used the same pads.

Yes, your description of the rears matches what he tried to sell me.
I think that pads were correct for my car -- just the wront rating.

I'll try another Auto Zone this week.

Thanks for all your help!

Autozone does carry two types of Performance Friction pads for Corvettes. Carbon Metallic and then there is Z-Rated Pads.

412Z is for Z-Rated pads for front
413Z is for Z-Rated pads for rear

My local Autozone only had the Carbon Metallic in stock...so waited a few days for the Z-Rated came in...gone thru one set already...free replacements!

Awesome Deal!

Just beware those pads have a LOT of brake dust. I understand that performance pads will create dust, but those pads were ridiculous(did I spell that right?) My wheels were completely black after a day of spirited driving. My .02

I went to GM DuraStop ceramic when I did the C-5 brake upgrade. I had the PF carbon metallic before. I used to have to wash my wheels every time I drove the car. The ceramic stops well, does't fade and has virtually no dust. I am really pleased with them.

They are not the same. The may be under that impression. PFZ web site will show you. The list the Carbon's seperately from the Z rated pads.

Just tell them you want part number's 412Z and 413Z. That's teh front and rears if you want both. Knuckle heads.

Put some ricer label on it and it would sell like hotcakes.

Did you break in the pads with the recommened procedure?

I've used them for years on two different vettes. They never dusted as bad as you are saying. Alot of us on here don't have really bad dusting and a few do. I'll never understand that.

BTW - MY vette is my only car. I use it 50 miles a day. The only time I see dusting is during an all day autocross event.

What kind of spirited driving were you doing? Stoppies from 150mph..
Any true performance pad will dust in a case like that. Don't want the dust then use OEM pads. They work good enough for spirited driving. Change your fluid if you are getting brake fade.

I'm very familiar with brake systems. Spirited driving means any thing other than driving like grandma. I and many others I have switched to other brake pads because of the excessive dust from Performance Friction. Don M stated that he switched to ceramic pads. I have also gone to creamic on all of my vehicles and am very pleased with the performance and low brake dust.

p.s. Let me know where I can drive 150mph without going to jail, and I'll test my brakes at that speed.

I, too have the PFZ's. I really don't notice too much dust, and I certainly don't drive like Grandma. Maybe you're not cleaning the wheels often enough. ;)

P.S. You can Drive 150MPH without going to jail, anywhere....As long as you don't get caught...:nono:
