Mostly on the C5 forum but have issues with my 95 LT1 right now.
After sitting several weeks, the battery was stone dead. Disconnected and recharged. Following that, the engine would spin over fine but would not start. Finaly got to checking it out, now it will start, run rough and then stall, esp if I give it any throttle. Fuel pressure is good according to my gauge. No check engine lights. My code reader is with a friend who is out of town so I havent checked that yet.
By way of background the car sat for several years at a friends house who had bought it. I cleaned the tank out, flushed with fresh gas, changed the battery, oil, tires, fuel pump and repaired some wiring and vac lines that mice had chewed. Thing is, it ran surprisingly well, started right up and no issues until now. I had been driving it at least once a week until a month ago and convinced the GF we should keep it as a second car for her.
I changed the water pump ~8 yrs ago but not the optispark, its original ~116k. I suspect that and or the coil.
What things should I look at next? Codes? Any chance it is just the cap/rotor?
... I cleaned the tank out, flushed with fresh gas, changed the battery, oil, tires, fuel pump and repaired some wiring and vac lines that mice had chewed.
That old gas sat in your gas filter for years... did you change it, too? Additionally, have you checked your fuel pressure at the FPR?
Doesn't sound like the Opti to me. As bassackwards pointed out, bad Optis throw codes.
Not the opti then. Tach gets its signal from the Opti. If the tach is working, not shuddering or jerking around, the opti is working. I agree w/the other suggestion to check the ICM.
It's not the 'fuel in the fuel filter"; the second you turn the key on and the pump runs, that fuel is pushed though though the system, back to tank and diluted to where it won't matter, by the fresh fuel that you put in the tank.
That and fuel doesn't go bad in a couple weeks (not years, Dr Dyno)
What if it is a mechanical issue, IE a rotor or cap, rather than the pickup?
That is correct; it could be mechanical/after-the-primary side, and that wouldn't show on the tach. To me, that's not a "bad opti", as to me, "bad opti means the bearing failed or the optical sensor is not working correctly.
