My '92 automatic drives and accelerates up through the gears fine however when I punch it to pass it will shudder. It does it typically when it is cruising in overdrive at 55mph or so.
Tape a Fuel Pressure gauge to the windshield and go for a drive. Then, punch it to see if the fuel pressure decreases. If it does, your fuel pump might need replacing.
This sounds like something in the transmission. I agree, check fuel pressure, but I just feels like a torque converter or something within the gearbox.
When was the last time the transmission was serviced?

Thanks. I'll get a gauge hooked up and check.

I have owned it for about 3 years and don't know when the tranny was serviced last. I changed all fluids except the tranny last year. I guess I need to change the fluid and filter in it. I've heard that you should replace only half of the fluid amount. Is this correct?

There is a myth running around that the old fluid somehow coats the trans parts and that somehow magically allows the transmission to work better. The myth says that the detergent in the new fluid washes away (to where?) the magic coating and then the trans fails.
When you drain a trans there is still a lot of fluid in the torque converter and the various passages and valves in the trans. Your trans will drip for DAYS if you take off the pan and just leave it open.
Just drain it all and replace it. Make sure you measure the level when the fluid is HOT. I found that it takes about a minute of idling after driving for the level to settle down and stay consistent.

buddy owns a transmition shop and he doesnt recomend a total flush if you have more then 60k on the existing fluid. He says its about a guarantee of a leak at least. He tells me either change it every 50k with a flush or if you have more miles then that just drop the pan and change the filter and replace the fluid you lost doing that. He makes money off of a flush and im sure hed like to make that money but is reputable enough to pass on it.
I had some serious TCC shudder on my old '89 Silverado. I do not believe in additives but a friend of mine said to try some Lubeguard, Dr.Tranny Instant Shudder Fix. With nothing to lose I tried that and the shudder quit within 5 minutes. It did come back about 20,000 miles later and I did it again. Gone and was still working when I sold the truck.
Does the shudder happen on the 4-3 downshift. When you're cruising in 4th gear with the torque converter locked and you floor it the torque converter unlocks and you'll probably downshift into 3rd. Is that where it's shuddering?

Yes. The shudder is when I'm cruising in OD and punch it to pass a slower car. It shifts fine all other times with a slight pick at 1st to 2nd.

Thanks. All I plan to do is drop the pan and change the filter. Not going for a flush.
