Default 1985 Corvette Fuel Pressure Problem

First time on the board. I'm trying to do the work myself. Any help would be appreciated. two months ago the check engine light came on. the car would run rough occasionally like it wasnt getting fuel, mainly when I ran it lower than 6 gallons. I would fill it up and it would be fine. It recently stalled coming off the highway. I put 2.5 gallons of gas in it and it started up, filled the tank ran fine. Then couple days later it completely stalled out while driving. I put a bunch of gas in it, but it wouldn't start. Replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter and it would start up sometimes and oil pressure would go to normal, but it would just die after couple seconds. replaced distributor, rotor, and ignition coil, no gains. I can hear the relay come on and fuel pump too, however when I test the fuel pressure at the rail it zero when ignition is on, if I turn it over and start it, it roars to life, but fuel pressure only measures 8-10, then engine dies and it goes back to zero. Any ideas?

Pull the fuel pump and check to be sure that it is connected to the fuel line in the tank. Check the metal line to be sure that there are no holes in the line that would suck air if the fuel level was below any hole. Most of the pumps attach to a "pulsator" between the pump and the line. This sometimes disconnects so your not pumping fuel into the line...it may be leaking around the connection. You can replace the pulsator with a piece of 3/8 rubber fuel line and two screw on hose clamps.

You should have about 36-39 psi at the fuel rail with the key on, engine not running (vacuum hose to the pressure regulator unhooked).

Also check the fuel pressure regulator. Pull off the hose. If there is fuel in the hose the diaphragm in the regulator is torn and needs to be replaced.

check the regulator diaphragm first,
you can also pull the return line at the tank, plug it with a bolt and then prime the fuel pump and see what happens to your pressure.

I think you have it right...sounds like the hose to the pulsator is loose....

Thank you for your feed back. It is helpful to know what the final problem turned out to be.

Just replace the pulsator with a piece of fuel line and two clamps and your ready to go again.

WELL DONE!
