I downloaded Craigs software for checking a 93 LT1. http://members.***.net/craig.moates/zips/ECM852.ZIP When I try to open the disk, it says the following. ECM852 96KB Zip file. Then when I click on that it says MMSYSTEM281 This file could not be played. Check the file name or install a driver that supports this type of file. Can someone advise me on what I need to do? Thanks for your help!!

Did you use Winzip or something equivilant to unzip the file??? It sounds like windows is trying to open it in some sort of media software.
Mark,
No, all I did was click on it and it tried opening with media player. I dont believe I have winzip. I went to the start button, then to find feature and typed in winzip, but found nothing. Is this a program I should get? By the way, my computer is using windows 98. And thanks for your help!!
Thanks Bob, I downloaded it and now it opens. Now if everyone dosnt mind, Id like to ask a couple more questions. 1. I dont have a lap top, and im going to buy a used one for this program. Anything to look for or will any of them pretty much work? The program is in dos. 2. Any opinions on a cable to connect it with? Thanks again for your help!!
I just purchased a Compaq LTE 3500 (pentium 133) off ebay, for about a hundred bucks. I assembled a cable from a kit from Steve Ruse.. the entire kit cost $45 bucks, and includes everything you need to assmble (minus the soldering iron). If you dont feel comfortable soldering, you can order a pre-made cable for $65. His site is http://www.wotelectronics.com .
Both the laptop and the cable work great here.. it is a pretty inexpensive solution.
Ok, as you are well aware I know little about computers, but for scanning purposes will a old dos computer, (no windows) work for the craig moates program? And then if and when I learn enough to start burning my own chips, I could do that from my desk top computer? Is this a bad idea? Again Bob, and Mark, thanks for your help!!
Yes, the Moate's software *should* run from just about any old computer (it runs in DOS). But is your old DOS computer a laptop?? Or you will need a REALLY long ALDL cable to do any good testing.. ;)
Mark, I would only need a cord about 1320 ft. long :jester No, actually my home computer is a IBM with windows 98 and I think a 533 mhz processer. I was referring to a cheap used lap top to run the Craig Moates program only. And then in time burn the chips from my home computer.
I use an old laptop (P-133) with DOS to collect scan data, then burn with the PP-2 hooked to a desktop with windows in air conditioned comfort. I'm thinking I should put windows on the laptop and get the 12v adaptor for the PP-2 just so I wouldn't have to come all the way home to make a quick change.
WinZip also has a DOS counterpart which I run on the laptop to take 30 minutes worth of scan data (30 MB) and smash it down to 300K to transfer via floppy disk to the desktop for spreadsheet number crunching.
