Default 92 lt1

Hey All, New member here first post and it just happens to be a question. I have a 92 LT1 engine in a 94 Chevy 1500. I have in the past replaced timing chain, water pump, optispark and plugs and wires. I don't drive it much, it only has 68,000 miles. Lately I have noticed the engine straining upon acceleration. I don't have the vin number on the engine to use my scanner, and I have looked underneath and cannot locate the Vin #. Is there any other way to get my vin#. I have heard of computer flashing, will this give me the VIN so that I can scan it rather than replacing parts without knowing which actually needs replacing.

The Vin number is 17 digits
Example for a 92 Corvette LT1
1G1YY23P9N5800001

1=Nation of origin US
G=Manufacturer GM
1=Chevrolet division
YY= First Y is Car Line. Second Y is Series ( Y for standard Corvette or Z for a ZR1)
2=Two door Hatchback 3 would be a Convertible
3=Code Restraint system Manual seat belt with drivers air bag
P =LT1
9=- Check digit
N=1992
5=Assembly Plant Bowling Green KY.
Last six digits=800001=Plant sequential number (example if this number was a 0ne, it was the first vehicle produced). I'm not sure why the Corvette sequence begins with a 8.

You can use the Vin above and it should work for your scanner.

What ECM are you using for the project? If you're using the ECM for the LT1 a scanner should pick up the 4 digit scan code of the PROM in the ECM but as mentioned most scanners only ask year, platform and engine to select the information in the scanner.

VIN should be stamped into the block behind the head shouldn't it?

on the block between the PS reservoir and the head, or, down by the oil temp sensor, above the oil filter. Take your pick.

I do appreciate the advice, I will try it this weekend. I have had this truck for approximately ten years and love the power the LT1 gives me, I actually thought about mods, but I'm not in any hurry for mods, just want to be confident to fire her up and drive where i need to go. Thanks again

thanks for the time you have taken to reply. To be honest I'm not very mechanically inclined. I will connect my scanner this weekend and let you know what happens. Thanks again

Assuming you're using the Corvette ECM does your setup have a check engine indicator?

If it does you can short pin A to pin B and turn the ignition On. The Fan will come on
and you may hear the IAC valve resetting.

The Service Engine Soon indicator will flash 12 three times and any DTC's three times.

Default still trying

Tried the vin numbers from the previous post and now my scanner doesn't connect. So here a quick update, just to remind you guys, there was a noticed hesitation while driving, with A/C going it was more like a hard miss then almost flooring to get up to speed. One thing I've noticed since is a rattle along the left side below the engine...catalylic converter maybe? I have read previous post so BLUF, is it the right thing to do to replace the Cat before doing any further parts replacement. Or should i spend the money on full tune up including opti, replacing seals and checking water pump, while ordering a cat deletion kit?

Need to know what model and year computer you have.
94-96 Corvette computers used an OBDII 16 pin connector.
94-95 were not 100 percent OBDII compliant so most scanners don't work.
96 was OBDII compliant.

1) Can you post the numbers on the Computer sticker on the outside of the case?

2) Is the miss only when the AC is on?
3) Could be Opti but you need to check for codes. Could be the distributor cap (carbon tracking) or loose rotor.(screws are known to back off).

4) Have you verified fuel pressure?

I was assuming you were using a 92-93 Computer. 92-93 computers are know to have poor solder joints which cause all kinds of problems.
Car will run fine then stall, misfire etc...

If you have the connector like below.

You can pull ECM codes by shorting Pin A to Pin B. Any codes then flash the Service Engine Soon Indicator which is a light bulb controlled by the computer.

Using this method requires no scanner. If there any codes they may
point to your problem.

As for the catalytic converter rattle, a hard/brittle ceramic type of
material does break inside them. Some people will drop the exhaust and hollow out the cat. Unless you have emissions testing that would eliminate that problem.
