Default U Joints half shafts

I know this has been beaten around here a good bit but I though I would add my 2 cents. Little back ground mine is a 1988 but all should be the same. I have no leg and little movement with the other leg so this slows me down on just about any job. I've been in the wrench turning bussiness for over 37 yrs. Today I needed to replace the joints on the half shafts. I looked thru a bunch of post on here and other places to see what short cuts were out there. Honestly not to much. So I jacked the rear of the car up and took a look I could not see any reason that anything needed touched except the shaft. 1st I removed the straps holding the joints at the rear its self. Then took a screwdriver and poped the joints out of the yoke, Next I did the same thing at the hub then I pulled the shaft out. I then replaced the joints. Back to the car I installed the joints at the hub then I remove the caps on the joint at the rear. I positioned the joint in place with out the caps. I rotated the shaft and rear so there would be a cap missing at the top and one at the bottom. I then replaced the cap at the top then I took a screwdriver and pried the joint out far enough at the bottom to install the cap there. I then installed the straps tighten everything down and I was done. Total time per side was about 1and a 1/2 hours. I had nothing to loose by trying it this way and all went very smooth. Hope this helps everyone.

Default U-Joints

Did mine the other month. I pulled the spindle nut along with the straps on the inner u-joint and took the whole assembly out as a unit. Easy to change the u-joints plus easy to change the Teflon washers at the same time. Tape the caps on the inner u-joint and slip it all back in place, just remove the tape prior to putting the straps on the inner u-joint. The washers are cheap and being I had it all apart, wanted to do it all to eliminate any possibility of any noise once-and-for-all.

Worked fine for me.
