Default Code 42

91 L98, it started yesterday shutting off after it got hot. After I let it cool down it would start and run normal until he heated up again. It set a code 42 which I can track using my Helms manual. I just thought I would ask if anyone had this happen and maybe could give me some direction. I hate intermentant problems. This forum is such a wealth of information and usually someone has experience the problem before.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!!

Since the problem is in the EST circuit, unless the conector in the Blk/Tan wire is dirty/loose I think the diagnostic procedure is in order to isolate the problem.

Code 42 can be set and stored for sometime after setting timing. Have you done this recently, and this fault may be elsewhere?

No when it acted up then the check engine light came on. I then checked the code and it was 42.

IV had this code set on different cars for different reasons like someone else said check the connection where the set timing connection is at. If that is good pull the cap make sure all the connection going to the module are pluged in tight and clean. Iv seen the connection going to the module back out do to age of the plug so you have to litterly pull the connection off the module and look to see if the wires are pusshed all the way into the plastic block check this carefully cause it is hard to see. If this is not the problem I would hightly expect module. Please check the connection at the module real real good

I also noticed that the IAC counts are very low when it first started and ran correctly then jumped to zero when it would act up. It didn't set a code this time. I'm thinking it could be the ECM or the ignition module.

Found the problem. I had put a small cap distributor on it months back and crimped the insulated connectors onto the wires. One of the wires had backed out and became intermittent. With resistance comes heat and it would open, when it cooled it would reconnect. I soldiered them on and that solved the problem. Thanks for everyone's input!!!
