Default 84 operating temp

fixing up a 84 for my military son.

- what temp do you run the engine?

- we switched to a high volume fan and shroud. 180 thermostat. fan kicks on at 200, off around 185ish. engine routinely cycles between 180-200. on these hot days - up to 210.

- AC isn't working, assume temp will go even higher when I finally stop it from kicking my butt and fix it. I know these are hot running engines, but what really is safe? hose look good, real good, but old. wondering if I should replace with engine getting so hot. Must have AC, son had a brain injury - heat is a challenge.

even my 426 hemi runs cooler than this engine.

My 86 gets up in the 220's just as it's designed to do. You're fine.

With the original setup the fan came on around 238*, so you are not running hot at your temps.. With the a/c working, it will operate the fan also.

If it gets "too hot", the fan will already be on, won't it? OP said it comes on at 200.

Up to 260 is "OK" with GM.

240 - 245 while stopped in traffic on my '84 when it's hot outside and the AC is on - been wondering if this is too hot myself and it's good to see that it isn't.
