Actually, it occasionally works for a few min. The pressure is up in the system (I had a mechanic check it). After checking a bunch of wires for voltage he seems to think it's the control module, but he even admitted it was just an educated guess.
I do have the c68 electronic climate control, and yes, a light is blinking (the outside air temp light), however it has been doing that since I bought the car with no bad side effects. The a/c has worked perfectly up until this past month, and I'm in Georgia, so I get to use it most of the year. :)
Any Ideas/Suggestions would help. By the way, how do I get the trouble code off of the ECC controller?
Re: '89 Air Conditioning not working (WhiskeyPapa)
The little light on my '89's A/C control panel blinked once too. I didn't know what the problem was - everything was working fine at the time - so I just disconnected the battery for 20 seconds to reset everything. When I reconnected the battery and the light never blinked again.
Try that. If the light continues to blink after reseting things, then it may be an indication of a more serious problem.

Attempt to read the codes from the C68.
The button sequence changes from year to year, so give this a try:
key ON position engine off
hold up and down fan switches for a few seconds until “00” appears on screen
hit auto button in middle and codes will appear
Re: '89 Air Conditioning not working (WhiskeyPapa)
OK, I've just checked the GM service manual.
First, try disconnecting the battery again, then reconnect it after about 20 seconds or so. The air-mix door may have been disturbed and disconnecting the battery will cause it to recalibrate itself.
If the light continues to blink after reconnecting the battery, then there's a chance of a more serious problem. The great thing is you can diagnose this. With the car ON, but not running, press and hold the EXT TEMP button, and press and release the AUTO button. Once you do that a number will be displayed (-00 or something). Repeatedly press the WARM button until you see -08 on the display (this is the number of the C68s diagnostic mode). Now, press the COOL button to display the stored diagnostic code. The codes break down as follows:
00 = no faults
01 = air-mix valve actuator feedback open
02 = outside temp sensor open
04 = outside temp sensor shorted
08 = in car temp sensor open
16 = in car temp sensor shorted
If there is only one code stored, then it will be displayed as shown above. But, if there is more than one code, the number shown will be the sum of the two codes (for example, if codes 02 and 08 are stored, they will be displayed as 10).
A little confusing, but I hope that helps.

Ok, the ext temp/auto button method worked. It gives me code 02. Now, my Hanes manual says nothing about this sensor. Where is it, and what can I do to fix it? (and I take it a service manual would do me no harm right now, correct? Guess I should get one)
Re: '89 Air Conditioning not working (WhiskeyPapa)
The location of the OutSide Air sensor (OSA) according to the GM service manual is:
"...mounted on the centre bracket below the upper radiator support bracket near the bottom of the A/C condensor. It's electrical harness is routed along the lower support tie-bar to the OSA harness connector on the left front bulkhead."
Leave it up to GM's tech-pubs to make a simple situation more complicated than it needs to be...
If you get under the front end of the car and look up into the rad's intake, you'll see the sensor staring back at you on the passnger side - it looks like a 1.5"x2.5" black plastic box with a grill on it. You can't miss it, it's the only thing in there besides the secondary rad fan.
To remove it, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the single bolt holding it in place.
I don't know how much a new one will cost, but it's probably not that bad. But it would definitely explain why your A/C system wasn't working - the C68 controller probably didn't see enough of a difference between outside temp and inside temp due to a faulty OSA sensor, so it just never turned on the A/C compressor.

Check the connection,... The connector may have just come loose. These sensors generally only fail due to a mechanical failure. i.e. Something hit and broke it.
