Really new here to all this. Really appreciate some guidance. My A/C clutch won't engage. If I jump it from the 12v battery the clutch will spin right off no problem. Purchased a new Clutch Pressure Switch, that's good, when I disconnect the pigtail to the compressor and test the diode, I get a .500 in one direction, then a .428 in the opposite direction, am I doing something wrong? or do I have a bad diode? will a bad diode stop the clutch from engaging???I thought it was supposed to be open or zero???? Not an electrical wiz here for sure. Also the system was upgraded to r134 however I don't know if its empty or not? How long can I jump the clutch in order to suck some refrigerant into the system?? or better still how long should I jump the the clutch before burning up something? The clutch won't engage period if the system is empty am I Correct in assuming that?????? Really kinda lost with electrical? Thanks for any help and guidance!!!!!Sorry for the long post.
You need to put gauges on it to see..if there is any refrigerant in the system..so yes..it won't engage if it is empty..and since it was converted..who knows what was done..
You can buy a gauge manifold at any auto store..but do a little research on how to use them..you don't want refrigerant blowing into your eyes...its not fun..post up and we'll help you..
ps..i used to say bring it to a shop..but what the hell..you can learn to do it...
Thanks, I will go look for some gauges today. I really appreciate your help. The A/C is not an important issue as I live in the cold country, but I got into it, and started learning, now I would like to finish it. A/C and Electrical are my weakest points, I virtually found this vette in a barn complete with squirrels nest and chestnuts, two five gallon shop vacs full of "nest", and a lot of electrical issues I'm trying to fuddle through. I could take it to a shop but my wallet isn't that deep. Thanks for the response, I'll be back here i'm sure.
Read every post on here about AC, you'll learn a alot..especially those from SunCR..he knows the systems up and down.
okay (sunCR) i'll do that. the only lights working on the car were the headlights, brake and turn signals, so I got deeply involved with fixing all the courtesy lamps, tag light, and side lamps etc., and backed off the a/c a notch or two for now. And, when I ask about the a/c manifold gauges at the auto parts store I don't think the parts man and I understood each other, so I need to do more research myself. Really appreciate your acknowledging me here. I've got a lot of work and learning to do on this vette for sure. But enjoying it.
