Default Change in Early C4 Digital Clusters......

A Friend of mine was in an accident a few weeks ago about 200 miles from home. He called the sherrifs office that has his car impounded to get the mileage and they told him that they were unable to read the odometer because it was a digital display odometer.

His car was an 86, but my 86 has a mechanical odometer in the upper right hand corner of the cluster, and the trip is a digital read out.

Was there a time during the eraly version of the C4s that the odometer was a digital readout?? Or were they all mechanical??

All 86's were mechanical, they probably just figured since it was a vette it was digital like the 90's and above.

I think in 86 the only things that were changed on the dash were the angle of the dash (to better reflect sunlight) and the addition of a photoresistor to adjust dash brightness based how dark it was outside.

Thanks for the reply. That is what I was thinking, but I have been wrong on issues like this before so I thought I would go to where the knowledge is.

An upshift light was also added to the tachometer pane.

Interesting........my 85 has that photoresistor too.......... and I have seen a LOT of 86 stuff on the car ........... but it's titled as an 85......... and when I bought a top for it I specified 85 and the used top I got was off an 85 and guess what ..........it didn't fit .......... (I modified it to fit though) so the body is definitely later than it's titled .........I figure it's been stolen and recovered or rebuilt somehow but it runs great and I have a clear title so screw it :seeya

That's an '85 VIN. And fairly early at that.

They may have chaged the dash angle and added the photoresistor in 85. I could be off by a year.

The top thing is interesting. There are 3 style tops.

1984 - Early 1986
Late 1986 - 1988
1989 - 1996

You should check out the stamp on the engine block to see if it matches your VIN.

That's a weird thing too because it's etched like with an engraver but the casting dates are all 84
