is the apora pump from autozone any good? They are $133 with a lifetime warranty...has anyone put one of these on their vette? I don't want to get one that will fail anytime soon though, so maybe I will just go with the gm part anyway...
I can recommend going to a Meziere Electric water pump. It uses your old housing. I got the Heavy Duty model from SpeedDemon for about $220 (plus another $15-20 in electrical parts). It's an easy installation. It adds 8-12HP (dyno verified).
The price you got of $277 is good, but it's invalid. Those guys at gmpartsdirect tack on a 25% handling/shipping fee. If you can figure out how to get one without them "handling it", good luck. I'd call Jeff Kopp at Superior Chevrolet.

if this gets you 8-12 hp at only a little bit more $$ than doing the GM waterpump... sounds like a deal!!
I just did a little research on that pump, and i think i will get one. What is the difference between the standard and heavy duty pumps? How about reliability? I usually don't take very long trips in the vette, but if i do i want to get there without breaking down!!
The HD is a little longer and pumps higher volume, I think I heard about 25-30% more. If you're in a hot climate then go for the HD. Meziere says something like 2000 hours MTBF. At 40 mph that's like 80,000 miles.
It comes with a wire set that includes a 20amp inline fuse. I've heard of 2 instances where the fuse holder melted and the pump stopped. When I did the installation I cut it out and put a 20 amp automotive fuse back by the battery.
John...please post if this fixes it. Sounds exactly like my problem. Thanks.
Sounds like it's acting a bit like mine. Mine is very intermittent and the hotter the engine compartment gets the more it misses. At idle it will jump 500 rpm every 5-10 seconds.
If it's missing on the highway and I mash the gas, after an initial stutter it will take off and run smooth for a couple of minutes.
Mine has been getting worse. 6 weeks ago we noticed the odd idle.
Just got the new opti yesterday, next Monday the car goes under the knife!
guys wouldnt it just be easier to get an after market ignition system that works better than the opti and isnt as sensitive to water?
why isnt this done commonly? is there more to it than that?
