Re: Do i need cats (ZRWANABE)
I'm sure some of the LT1 guys will chime in but in Lingenfelters small block Chevy book he says they (the cats) cost about 10hp on an LT1. Dunno if it will cost you elsewhere if you remove them like vader 86 suggests - it might though.
I expect you'll be quicker without than with though..
Then again, why mess with it? With the high-flow cats that are on the market today you can stay legal and fast.
Here in Texas I can't get the inspection done if the cats are not in place. Besides, it's really fun to beat the pants off of someone, then have them look over/under the car and see that it has a full exhaust system...including cats.
Aside from meeting inspection standards or needing to keep everything original, there is no reason why you cannot remove the cats. The main issue in later models, is the location of the O2 sensor. The '92 O2 sensor is in front of the cats and will therefore not notice any change.
I prefer to keep the cats off my car but if there is a small rodent problem then the cats are allowed inside , the only problem if getting the hair vacuumed out. :jester
where is the o2 sensor on a "91" I was thinking about titling the vette in my moms county because the only inspection is visual and what I mean by visual is no smoke you pass, smoke you fail. I was going to run true dual 3' with no cats and a pair of flowmasters at the back I just didnt know what headders I was going to put on. Oh yea, how much better will my car run with out air emission pump and at the same time do an underdrive pully kit, will I notice a big difference?

the 92 has oxgen sensors before and after the cat on the right side
