I have a 1984 C4, all stock, 133,000 miles. The PO claimed his Uncle Vinny (ok I made the name up) "bored" out the injectors to make them pump more fuel. Number one, can this be done? Number two, can I go to the parts store and buy two stock injectors and put it back to stock. I feel it's too much fuel for a stock motor and did nothing to make it run better. The car runs fine, the Crossfire system seems to be working properly, it just seems to be spraying (one injector is kind of dripping) too much fuel at an idle. I don't think the extra fuel is necessary.
Maybe I'm just not trusting Uncle Vinny?!
We have some common confusion here. It's the throttle bodies (housings) that get bored out, in an attempt to improve performance. The injectors are separate parts of the TBI system. When you say the injectors look like they're spraying too much, you have no accurate way to make this wild guess. The cone of spaying fuel should look very smooth and uniform from both injectors. If you see dribbles or an erratic spray pattern, this is a problem. If the car has not been used for quite some time, some injector cleaner in the fuel tank may be enough to clean up the spray pattern.
Very important: Check your fuel pressure. Search this forum for ways to do it.
You may need a new fuel filter.
Try the easy stuff first, before you start throwing money at it. These injectors are very reliable. I have 240,000 miles on my original injectors! That's a neat thing about our Cross-Fires. Nobody else can inspect their injector spray patterns while the engine is running!
mine dribbled with the key on like a leaky faucet. I got a throttle body kit from ebay with new o rings and gaskets fixed it right up, about 25 bucks. A new coolant temp sensor was in order too, the wires were corroded and broken insulation shorted the connector itself was dirty. I got the pigtail with the sensor at az.
Thank you Hot Rod Roy, I was unclear on what was bored- I will have to check the fuel pressure and clean (or rebuild) the injectors, the car sat- for a LONG time out in a field. I'm pretty sure Uncle Vinny didn't check for spray pattern! It is not very uniform on the left injector.
