Default Spark Plugs

Recently purchased a '95 Coupe with 86K miles and want to change spark plugs. Is this something a novice can do or easier just to pay someone?
What spark plugs should I get and where can I get them?
Im sure most would suggest replacing the wires w/ it so Ill take suggestions on that also.
Thanks

A novice can do it, but it is a MAJOR PAIN IN THE A@#.
I would suggest NGK TR55s plugs and some taylor wires.
I just doing mine and it took me about 8 hours to do, grrr. Oh well, I really enjoy the satisfaction of doing something yourself and not having to pay like $300 to $500 for someone else to do it.

Say hello to your new Corvette and just start with the plugs.

Later you can do the wires if needed.

Just finished the plugs on my 91 (L98). Serious pain. Pulling the right side inner wheel well makes it a little better. Need to do it at least once so you know it's done right and why others charge so much to do it! :cry

I did mine, And if I can do it a trained chimp can do it. Take your time. It took me about 8 to 10 hrs. I chanded the Coil, Cap & rtr, Wires, I had to crimp my own wires and that took a while, and plugs. A good Tech could doit in 3 or 4 hrs. (At $60 hr I was quoted around $200)

I used AC rapidfire plugs, Accell Braded wires, Cap and A super coil. I would start on the right front plug, It gets easer from there. Thats what I did.

Cool, another Evansville member! Welcome to The Forum. Plugs are a major pain in the butt the 1st time, but it gets easier each time you do it. I've done it 3 times  The #8 #6, #7 plugs are worst, especially #8 :cuss.

Passenger side wires = not too bad, driver side = Oh Boy

Why do you want to do these things?

I've got the plug change job down to about 2 hours now. 1st time I did it took me almost 4 hours. One thing, you *must* use a good anti-seize compound on the threads of the new plugs. Aluminum heads and all. Lot of guys use the NGK TR55 plugs, I tried them and prefer the factory stock AC 41-906's. I used a copper-based anti-seize compound, make sure whatever you use it conducts electricity so the plugs get a good ground connection, than a little bit of di-electric grease in the plug wire's terminal boot.

Make sure engine is cold, having sat overnight is good.

A shop will want around $235 to do the wires. That's about what Tony McKnight quoted me at his Corvette shop (recommended if you use a local shop). Guy named 'Van' at Northside Chevrolet is a good LT1 wrench, but you have dealership labor rate which is high.

Recently purchased a '95 Coupe with 86K miles and want to change spark plugs. Is this something a novice can do or easier just to pay someone?
What spark plugs should I get and where can I get them?

Excellent, Evansville.....Im sure to see you around town

Sounds like the plugs can be done but are a heck of a time to do them!
I want to do change the plugs out, because it doesnt seem like they have ever been changed and it seems like people tell me to change the wires at the sametime I do the plugs.....
I figured this group of people would know best on what to do

Here's my ride, maybe you've seen it around town...

Taken two weeks ago @ Wesselman Park

Hey, one thing (important!) a new LT1 owner should know: DON'T HOSE DOWN THE ENGINE TO CLEAN IT! Maybe you already know... Opti-spark distributor sits on front of engine block nestled under the water pump, and it is VERY sensitive to moisture such that if it gets sprayed water can get in and it can permanently screw up the internals of the distributor. In '95 they went to a more robust one and vented it with engine vacuum but they're still best not getting wet if you can help it.

Advance Auto Parts in town can get them in about a day or two, about $1.50 each. Be sure to gap properly. I'd ask the guys on the forum running them what gap they're using. Depends on your engine being stock or modded, too (gap).

Hey Ron,

Did you buy your 'Vette from the dealer next to Applebees on Morgan Avenue? I thought I saw an Aqua coupe there awhile back... Just wondering.

I JUST DID MY PLUGS & WIRES ON '92 LT1 (10 HRS). PASSENGER SIDE NOT BAD. DRIVERS SIDE A SON OF A B*@$%. REMOVE HOSES ALONG THE HEADS TOWARDS THE REAR. REMOVE ALL THOSE PRETTY LITTLE CLIPS HOLDING THE WIRES. DISCONNECT THE MOUNTS ON THE ASR AND PUSH IT OUT OF THE WAY. REMOVE THE OUTER MOUNT HOLDING THE ALTERNATOR ASSEMBLY. REMOVE THE CENTER PORTION OF THE WHEEL WELL, AS THIS WILL GIVE YOU ACCESS TO MORE PRETTY WIRE CLIPS UNDER THE ALTERNATOR. IF YOU REMOVE THESE THINGS FIRST IT WILL SAVE TIME. ACCESS THE DISTRIBUTOR FROM BENEATH THE CAR. SLIDE UNDER TO THE FRONT OF THE OIL PAN AND YOU CAN ACCESS THE WIRES. ALSO, HAVE PLENTY OF EXTENSIONS AND A WIDE VARIETY OF METRIC AND STANDARD SOCKETS. I FIGURE IF I HAD THESE INSTRUCTIONS I COULD HAVE DONE MINE IN 5 HOURS. I HAVE NOT SEEN A '95 SO THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY NOT HELP. GOOD LUCK
