1 second delay
I've worked on a lot of cars but never seen a delay in cranking like my Corvette. What is the reason my '93 has a 1 second delay before the engine cranks after the ignition key is turned to start? Is there is some sort of electrical signal check?
Help me solve this mystery and I can sleep better at night knowing the facts. lol Thanks in advance.

Do the dash gauges respong immediately or does their response also have the 1sec delay?
If both delayed, look to the ign sw, else investigate the starter circuit as suggested above.

Gauges light up immediately. What exactly am I testing for at the starter? I have a 1 second delay each and everytime. There has never been an issue with the engine not starting or the starter not cranking.

If the small starter wire does NOT immediately energize and has a 1 second delay then what should I be looking for? If it DOES light immediately, then what? The amount of delay is the same each and everytime, and the engine never has a problem turning over and starting.
What exactly is this test trying to determine?

A delay when starting is usually electrical resistance from a bad starter, starter solenoid or battery cable.
Electrical resistance builds and heats the starter cable as electricity tries to make its way to the starter. Crank the engine over a few times and feel the positive battery cable. If the cable insulation feels warm or hot, it's most likely the starter or starter solenoid is shorting out and will need to be replaced soon.

I have seen grease on a starter motor drive shaft slow down the engagement of the bendix and that will delay the engagement of the starter motor until the bendix has pushed through the grease. Once the car is warm the grease does not slow down the bendix and the car starts immediately.
