If you're running a ZF6 speed, either of the first two options would be good. The third engine will prove a little more work mating up the clutch/flywheel 'cause of the different bolt patter on the back of the crank due to the 2-piece rear main seal on the 400 block. Still 'do'able...just more work.

Personally, I'd build the 396 LT1. Lots of people have 383s. But a 396 SBC isn't quite as common, and has a nostalgic feel too.

Just my $0.02.

Good luck with the decision.

any realistic estimate for a 383 or 396 stroker with forged rods/pistons? how much to have a mechanic swap the engines?

Start off at about $8K and work up towards $14K. Labor for a turn key system should run between $1K & $2K depending on shops, labor rates, etc.

The upper end should include the entire package;
cam, rods, pistons, rings, seals, headers, heads (P&P), intake, injectors, TB, fuel pump, oil pan, oil pump, MSD ignition, etc, etc...
