What I thought was the clacking and chirping of a bad U joint has shown its ugly head with a blown yoke seal and 90 wt dripping down on my exhaust system which tells me the yoke bearing is about to fall out. All the pics in the FSM shows the removal being done from inside the differential and installation from the outside. Can I pop the seal off from outside and access the bearing for removal? I am thinking the bearing race wont be able to be removed. Any tips will be appreciated!
Rear has to come out, then you will need a big pair of snap ring pliers to get the snap ring off the axle shaft on the inside. Do not lose the snap ring it is also a shim.
Anybody know if this can be done with the rear end in the car or does it have to come out and opened??
If you mean "half-shaft" yoke then the differential needs to be on the bench. This is a D36 or D44? Doesn't matter except in the purchase of parts. Could it be done "in car"? Yes, but it would be a struggle I'd think and if you had one bad bearing I believe I'd just do all six and the three seals. Much easier operation on the bench.
Thanks guys. I looked at the exploded view of the rear end and can see the snap rings on the yoke shafts and I understand a little better. I wish I had the skill set to set up ring and pinions but I dont. I understand the principle but no hands on. My other problem is that this is my DD and has to be up and running Tuesday.
I guess my next question is if I remove the c beam, the half shafts and drive shaft, can I unbolt the carrier from the batwing to remove it and access what I need to do? Do I have to remove the spring as well? Sorry if these are elementary questions but Ive never dealt with a Vette rear end. I am not scared of first times, this car has handed me plenty.
