automatic shifter sliding through gears
Got in tonight and tried to put it in drive and it slid all the way to first with out much effort. Then tried to get in park and it seemed like it wouldn't lock in, so I took my foot off the brake and it was in reverse. Is this a problem with the transmission or is there a spring in the shifter that isn't locking properly?

The end of the shifter cable has a slot in the end that fastens to the 700R/4 shift shaft. The retainer nut may have loosened.

Any suggestions on fixing this problem? I imagine just get under the car and look for this nut. Should I put in a specific gear and then tighten it? Or does it matter? I really need to get a helm's manual!

To set the linkage I believe you put the shifter into N and adjust the tranny lever until they agree.
Then tighten the nut and verify all shifter positions are correct.

Can anyone give me some more info on where the linkage is, do I have to get into the trans or is this something I should be able to see from underneath the car.

You can reach under the car from the left side and access that linkage; it's maybe a foot behind the front wheel.
If you reach in along the side of the tranny you can trace the cable to the retainer nut (dont' remember the size).
