That's one of tomorrow's project. Any tips / suggestions? I've read through the service manual. It seemed straight forward enough until they got to the "Using Tool J-1859-03 remove wheel asm" part. Is that that little flower shaped bolt thinggie in the diagram? Is there a tool I can get at Pep Boys (buy or rent) which will do this or is there some garage improvisational equivalent? crazy:
BTW, I got a very nice re-wrapped wheel (I sent in an eBay special as a core) from Chuck Pelton in Michigan ChuckPelton@comcast.net. Thanks to whomever the forum member was who recommended him. I also got a nice re-wrapped brake handle from him. TIA for the tips & help! :) ~Juliet
Re: Any tips for Steering wheel replacement? (Juliet)
What year car are you replacing it on? If it's a C4, the only advice I can give is to make sure the round sleeve that comes with your puller kit is on the tip of your puller, or you will do what I did and strip the threads in the telescopic shaft. I wound up trying to tap the threads again, and broke the tap off. Eventually had to cut the tip of the old shaft off to replace it. All because I didn't notice the sleeve had fallen off the puller tip and into the column.
Other than that caveat, the swap on a C4 is pretty straight forward. I bought my puller at Pep Girls, and it worked great. The little flower shaped doodad is connected to the lever on the top of the column that you move to telescope the wheel in and out. It is held in place by philips screws, and comes out very easily. Make sure you disconnect the neg terminal of the battery first, or you will set the horn off incessantly.
I bought a rewrapped wheel for my 84, the thicker design used on the 86-89 and I love it. Looks great and feels much better than the thinner wheel.

Thanks Frizle. The new wheel is now in place and the horn even still works!! :D Your tip about the spacer on the puller was an excellent one. The puller we have has a spacer, but the center of the puller stuck out about 1/16" beyond the spacer. I found a washer and put that above the spacer and it worked like a charm. :) I probably would have never thought to check the wheel puller end and even with the spacer in place I might have mangled up the center threaded piece. Thanks! ~Juliet
