Default Mass air flow sensor screens

Alright guys, I have heard a lot of debate on this and I am unsure what the general feel was. Remove the screens on the mass airflow sensor? My 1987 corvette already searches for a proper ideal I can tell. but I have heard this gives you up to 200 more air flow

If you remove your screens, all your doing is making it easier to damage the sensor wire inside the tube...I used a local friends spare maf sensor without screens for a short period of time while I was waiting for a new "Blower Works" maf sensor to be shipped, and I didn't notice one bit of difference in it..I believe the screens are there to smooth out the air flow...I say, leave it alone.....WW

Up to can be a negative number, my friend. Read enough sad posts about mods and you'll see it true.

It defies all logic that the cross-section blocked my the screen will make anything but a minimal change in flow, perhaps worse.

On the L98 engine, the real air blockage is the intake that was originally made for the Chevy (305) engine, and then used on the (350) L98 engine..The engineers at GM should have been shot for that screw up...With a better intake that stock maf sensor moves plenty of air....WW

Check out this article for lots of good information on the MAF screen modification:

My prior '88 was eventually building 298chp though removing the MAF screens and heat sink fins showed NO increase in trap speed == no chp gain.

That said, if you were building say 350-375chp this mod might show some gain?

From what I saw glancing quickly at the article above, the maf with both screens gave the best airflow, also, with removing the screens it looks like it changed the A/F ratio and made the car run lean...GM doesn't put this stuff on a car just for fun.....I'm sure when some things on these cars are modified there's a negative impact.....WW

Is your motor stock? If it is, how it's going to draw more air by removing the screens? Only thing that screen removal is going to do is inaccurate maf reading. Those screens are there to make the airflow more laminar = more accurate = more power.

I agree with all the posts. The screen does protect the sensor resistor and well as providing a smooth air flow for a more accurate reading. The software and tables are designed around how the hardware performs and how the sensor reacts with the screen in there.
