I think Simple Green is pretty safe, but to me Simple Green is kind of weak in desolving grease. I would have to let it soak for a long time for it to work.
I have used kerosene before and no probs. It just smells for a while.
I used it on my rear end cover to help get it clean.
Others may disagree, but i still use it. It will leave a FILM on the object,
so wipe it down w/ something if you need to paint it. Alcohol, thinner,
something that dries clean w/ no residue.

Unsure about the valve seats and the guides w/kerosene.
Wait until someone else chimes in to be sure.

Aluminum wheel cleaner works for me. Spray some on a rag and clean the part. Then use a wet cloth to wipe it off. Makes the part look brand new. I suggest not spraying directly at the part. Most cleaners react badly to some materials.
Machine shop parts washers (my machinist calls his the dish-washer) should work fine to clean them up. My machinist tossed my Accel base plate in to clean it up before I took it home to siamese...came out looking brand new.
If you have heavy stuff squirt it off at the car wash. Then use Lysol Basin, Tub and Tile cleaner. Brightens the AL right up without hurting any painted or rubber surfaces.
