My transmission with little miles and that has been babied by me is pretty much toast, I already have a mechanic that'll hook me up on the labor costs but he doesn't like doing rebuilds what do you guys reccomend as a replacement for a 1985 automatic that's a daily driver that won't break the bank.
A few years ago a standard rebuild in my area was between $1,200 to $1,400, that's just a rebuild, without installation...For a few hundred dollars more you can get a rebuilt trans off of Summitracing.com from a major remanufacture......You may have to use your tail section from the trans you have now to make it fit......WW
WW7 is correct about the rebuild cost + converter at $1500. I had a 4 post lift plus the help of close friend that had been a Chevy mechanic to help me replace and re-install. I had my 700R4 rebuilt by a qualified shop. I toured the place. Worth the work, yes.
How are we defining "daily driver"? I used to drive my 91 Firebird every day, even in the snow till it got smashed when someone hit me. At the time of the damage, it made 410 HP at the wheels. After which, I transferred the engine and trans to the 91 Vette. Obviously, that trans was modified.
You need to figure out how much power you make. Do you stomp on it every chance you get? I did 4 WOT runs a day unless there was snow or ice. My trans from Rossler Transmissions took basically daily beatings. Broke the sun shell gear after 3.5 years.
About 130 miles a week and very rarely stomping on it only swift acceleration a few times a week on onramps, power is roughly 260hp 330torque with the chip and exhaust that was on it when I got it

Was it chipped by dyno tune or how did those numbers arrive?
Regardless, I don't see that you need more than a stock rebuild.

Bley49 - I just had my 4L60 rebuilt locally (Thousand Oaks is 45 miles north of downtown Los Angeles) by a shop I trust very much CRC Performance Transmission. $1,300 with rebuilt torque converter (I do removal/installation). I had it beefed up a tiny bit (not much) over stock since we are aiming for 350 hp and 350 ft/lbs torque and occasionally auto-x. Otherwise, this is a daily driver.
I shopped several "national" and mail order rebuilders first, but I very much trust this local shop which has given me good advice for 10+ years and does ONLY transmissions.
As far as I know, you can't really buy a "NEW" 4L60 or 700R4 transmission. I believe pretty much all of them are rebuilds, more or less, depending on what new parts are installed.
Update your profile with your city and state since that sometimes allows CF members to refer you to people or businesses they know that are near you (sometimes they'll offer to come over and help too!!).
Save the wave and welcome to Corvette Forum!
Cheers,
