I have been digging around in the search engines and I am stuck trying to get a simple answer on engine removal. The 2 primary engine mount bolts wont come out because they are hitting the exhaust manifolds. I removed the left side manifold but I cant get to the bolt all the way to the back on the right side exhaust manifold. It appears that it will hit the HVAC unit. For a sanity check I have a few questions to remove the engine:
Do I need to remove the exhaust manifolds? Do I remove the 2 primary engine bolts or must I remove the engine mount bolts attached to the engine block on the right side?
Thanks for helping. Best

I can not comprehend what you are trying to write here.

Not knowing what BOZO may or may not have been into this area before...YES...you have to remove whatever you need to remove so the long bolts that go through your frame and through your motor mounts. NOT the 3 bolts (per side) that hold the mount to the engine block.
I was talking about the exhaust manifold bolt in the back, closest to the firewall on the right side. I removed the flex pipe from the exhaust manifold running to the intake manifold and I was able to remove the bolt and then successfully remove the engine. I did as you described to remove the long engine mount bolt on each side. Thanks for helping. The car has seen a great deal of neglect and abuse by previous owners. Too bad. I am shocked to see such an amazing car in such terrible condition. Only 90,000 mi and it would take more time and money to make it road worthy than it would take to replace it.reolve

Pull the manfolds/accessories or cut the bolt.
I had no problem removing the bolts when pulling the engine on my 86.
Sounds like someone installed the bolts "bassackwards"

When the guy before you put the bolts back in he put them in from the wrong direction..He probably had the exhaust manifolds off when he did it....WW

Thanks! Good point. If the long bolts were installed from the front with nuts on back they would have come out. They must have put the bolts in when the manifolds were off on last install. So, I guess that the engine has been out before or the mounts were replaced.
