Default 84 Steering Wheel Removal

Hi guys,

I've done a search but can't find what I'm looking for. I apologise if it is here somewhere, I just can't find it.

I have bought a replacement steering wheel for my 84. Just looking for some info on removing the wheel. I know that the cap, nut etc. need to be removed, but is there any need to disconnect the tilt steering **** from within the wheel hub? The wheel comes complete with the wheel hub with the recess for the tilt ****, and I'm just wondering how the wheel comes off, over that ****.

Do I simply pull the cap off, remove the nut and use a steering wheel puller to pull the wheel off? I just don't want to break the tilt know or mechanism in the process.

I hope this makes sense, but if not, happy to provide photos or to try to explain a bit better.

Thanks

Darren

And that is a bit of an art form to get right, but hardly rocket science once you see how it goes together.

Yes. I used a harmonic balancer puller, but any similar tool will work.

I had a 1990 Supra and needed to pull the steering wheel. I grabbed it at 9:00 and 3:00 and yanked hard and it came right off. That didn't work on the Corvette, though...

Go to Advance Auto or most any auto parts store and borrow a wheel puller, you only need to give them a small refundable deposit...You pop the center cap off with a screwdriver, remove the nut, then there are 2 screws holding the telescopic lock arm in place, remove the 2 screws and pull the lock arm out . ...You should then be able to use the wheel puller and remove the wheel..There are marks (dots) on both the steering wheel center hub and the shaft, to get the wheel straight again you have to line these up before pushing the wheel back on...........WW

Awesome reply WW7 and exactly what I was looking for. Yes, I meant the telescopic adjuster, not the tilt adjuster. Thanks again guys, will attack this tomorrow.

Its not that hard once youre in there, but do make sure you get the new wheel centered straight when you put it on and tighten. If its just a little off you'll notice later.

Hi Tom

Corvette Central for $215. Good quality and I'm very happy with it.
