Default Cruise Control ECM?

Hi guys, I have a 1979 C3 with an 1986 TPI unit and a 700R4. I would like to hook up a cruise control. I have some parts from the car the TPI came off. What I need to know is did the cruise in an 86 run through the ECM, or was it self contained? Also where did it get the speed information from? The VSS signal from the trans?

Thanks
Zorro

Hi

Unfortunatly the cruise control is connected to the instrument cluster and ecm, the instrument cluster has the speed signal from the transmission.

I recommend you get an aftermarket cruise control, they usually have a speed sensor connected to the tailshaft i believe.
They are a lot easier to install, with all the instructions.

That is exactly what I was afraid of. Thanks for the answer, I will look into aftermarket cruise.

You converted the 700R4 to a cable drive for your C3 cluster?

Yes, I used an adapter that had both the threads for the speedometer cable and a plug for the VSS connector for the TPI. It was a stock GM part. I think it was from either a 93 or 96 six cylinder Camaro.

It looks like this.
