I'm about to change the fluid and filter in my auto trans. Had a look today, but wasn't sure if I need to remove the "X" brace to get enough clearance to get the pan out?
I need to buy a FSM instead of my Haynes - it's useless!!
I have a coupe, so I don't have firsthand knowledge of the problem. That said...
The filter sits on the bottom of the pan. You need to drop the pan far enough to clear the filter, which hangs down about 4" or so. I doubt you have that much clearance without removing the X brace. I suppose it might be possible to work the pan around the X brace, but I think you'll spill a lot of ATF in the process.
I dropped my pan on the 95 it was a pita. When I put the brace back on it was slightly too close to exhaust and it made a vibration noise had to readjust brace by a hair
Removing the brace would take less time than trying to work around it. When the car if up on the jack-stands, slide a floor jack under the enter of the brace, and then pull the bolts, including the 4 smaller ones about a foot behind the 'X'. Then just pull the brace out while it is still on the floor jack.
If you don't want a big mess with spilled tranny fluid, suction most of out through the dipstick tube, and then pull the pan.

Thanks -that's more or less what we thought, particularly siphoning some fluid out first. Haynes was virtually useless on this one....surprise, surprise!! Thanks again.
