Just got an innova 3120 obd 1&2 reader for my 93 vette to try and figure out what's wrong. The reader just keeps saying it can't connect to the computer. The ignition is on but not running and I hear the reader turn the computer on but no communication
Take a look at the connector plug that plugs into the car. Check to see if any of the pins in the connector plug are bent. I had the exact same thing happen and I saw that one of the pins inside the plug was bent from connecting it. Straighten out the pin or pins and make sure that you carefully plug it into the car so none of the pins will get bent.
I checked. Nothing bent and it's a brand new reader and connector. I tried the reader on my other cars (obd2 tho) and it works so it's not a vaulter handheld
Ok now I'm really irritated. It seems a few fuses (glovebox not under hood) were mixed up from whoever had it before and that was one reason I had a dash buzz whenever the hatch sensor was depressed and the interior lights stayed on. The fuses are correct now but now my car won't start. Could electronic gremlins be so bad that incorrect fuse placement helps the car start? I would put it back if I remembered where the mixed up fuses went. Help
Wow...ok my battery was DEAD. Jumped it and tried to reread codes but no luck. The innova tech people said to try and use different model years and vin digits to access but no luck and the battery died again. Gonna change that and see if that helps. Wonder if a weak battery is the cause of all my other drivability issues......
As far as the battery being dead or a low charge, recharge it!! What voltage are you seeing? Use a digital voltmeter to read the voltage at the battery terminals. Make sure everything is off; ignition OFF and key out, close the doors to allow the interior lights to go off and make sure the underhood lights are off.
A fully charged battery will show a voltage reading of something like 12.6 to 12.8 volts. A battery is considered discharged at 12.0v. Also with a good battery and the engine running, you should see voltage around 14.1 to 14.3 if the alternator is OK. After a few minutes of driving, voltage should drop back to something like 13.5 to 13.7v.
