Any help would be greatly appreciated. So, it got very cold last winter and my one headlight would take a sec or two longer than other to go up when I turned them on. Then it started closing slower than other too. Then it didn't go up at all. I can manually crank it open. Strangley it sounds like the motor in the headlight that actually works is always going, like i can hear it constantly running, don't know if that is related or not. Anyway I was going to start trouble shooting things. I looked at the wires and there is a little box with a switch on it. What is this? There is a picture attached to this post. Is there an individual fuse for each headlight? Any thoughts going forward. The headlight that doesn't work doesn't sound like the motor is working. Thanks alot.
That switch might be to turn off the under hood lights when the hood is up. Pretty common modification.
The headlights are controlled by 3 relays that are mounted on the front of the driver's side wheel well. One relay controls the direction that the motor runs and the other two run the motors. You can swap the left and right relays and see if the problem moves to the opposite side.
You might have a stripped gear inside the headlight motor (very common problem). The only way to find out is to take it apart. This might be helpful:
Try manually cranking the "good" HL and compare movement rate with the "bad" one. If the "bad" one is much slower, open up and replace the three bushings.
Also, open the connectors to the motors to examine/clean the electrical contacts of any corrosion.

It looks like the one installed on my '88; very convenient when working under clam for any length of time with motor off.

Sorry, 65Z01, but krukker's '85 doesn't have the three bushings you're referring to. Those are in the '88-'94 headlight motors.
