Well I finely got arourd to pulling my transmission to install my new Yank converter, which I have had for 3 months. I have the transmission at the rebuilder and while im waiting on it to be rebuilt I am taking care of a few other things. One being installing a cooler. What is the best location for the cooler? also. should I run the fluid into the aux. cooler, then into the factory cooler. or reverse this, or run it totally indenpendent from the factory cooler. I have read where some do this, but I worry about it overheating in stop and go traffic. By the way, the cooler I got is a B&M #70264. The size is 7-3/8 H x 11 W x 1-1/2 D.
I just installed the same B&M cooler on my 94. I mounted it in front of the power steering cooler. You can use the 4 brackets included in the kit to mount the cooler using the same 4 bolts the power steering cooler is mounted with. Its a very secure mounting position and you end up with approx 1/4" gap between the tranmission cooler and the power steering cooler.
I installed mine inline with the factory cooler on the return side (lower output of radiator). The benefit to using the factory cooler is that it actually warms the trans fluid on initial startup as your coolant gets up to temp faster than you transmission. The adapters included in the kit work great and allow you to install the cooler w/o cutting the factory lines.
My two cents worth. Mine is installed in front of the A/C cooler. and is hooked in line with the radiator lines. If I get a chance, I will be moving it to the power steering cooler location, because I feel that it impedes the flow of the air to the A/C and water radiators. I feel that the trans cooler is heating the air before it goes to water radiator. I am having some issues with prolonged stop and go traffic and the A/C being on. You wnt the inital heat of trans fluid, but want to cool it to right temps after running awhile.
I have not had any air flow problems with the trans cooler where it is. The screen has not disturbed the air flow either.
Just completed a 4500 mile road trip and the engine temp was around 185-192 degrees with the higher temp being in Az. at 116 degrees.
In traffic, even a long time, the temps stay around 190-193 degrees. I have a Ed Wright chip and the fans come on at 193 degrees. I have also added a Griffen radiator. Works good for me. Scree was made out of chicken wire and painted black. About 1 1/2 hours work and I used the bolts that hold the spoiler on the bottom and three new screws on the top.
