Hope you can help me. I am about to start replacing my rear main seal.
I think i hav studied the process of this, and have a good idea of the process. However as I live in Denmark, i would like to be as well prepared as possible. If i suddenly need something, it will probably leave the "project" stranded for 2 weeks.
So far i have found out that i need this:
-Rear main seal (obviously)
-New flywheel bolts
-Sump gasket
-RTV sealant
Do i need anything else, special tools or something like that?
Also i read not to buy the Felpro main seal gasket, it would be better to buy the National item, there even is a heavy duty item. I think that this is the one i want? Can any of you point me towards where i can buy it? I have checked Ecklers and MAmotorworks, but cannot find it.
Also this RTV sealant, everyone writes about "The right stuff", i am also unable to find this? I have found these 2 types, which seems to might be ok?
I personally like the "Ultra grey" by permatex because of the added assembly time, plus the additional 50° upper range limit,, but to be honest anyone of these permatex sealers would work just fine for an "main seal" to block sealant.
Rear Main Seal I use National # 4359V..it is a Viton seal. Always worked well for for me in small blocks.Oil pan I use SCE gaskets available at Summit.A little pricey but a quality piece..

when you get that flywheel off; check the freeze plugs on the back of the block; if they're brass,,,they're probably okay. If they're steel, now would be a good time to pop them out and replace with brass,,,steel rusts and a pin hole leak (or worse) down the road would be a real inconvenience.
I will check them for sure, thanks for the advice. However the car has only done 25K miles, and the engine only 10K miles, and has seen no vinter driving, so i hope that they are ok.
However i anyone an point me in direction to where i can buy the right/best rear main seal for a 1994 LT1 (It is actually a 383 stroker with a lunati crank, does this change anything), i would really appreciate it.
Just a heads up for you. I do not have an Lt1. I had to buy a different seal from original (relocates where lip sits on crankshaft). Because crankshaft had wear (slight grove) where the orignal sat.
Good luck Joe
OK i am confused now. I have seen two piece seals now. But as i understadn theser er up to 1986? After this LT1's and LT4's use a one piece seal? But i still cant find one. Can any of you help with a link?
Here you go...This is one of the better seals..These are all one piece seals...Even in Denmark they should have parts stores that stock one piece rear seals for 350 Chevy engines...WW
