I say again, 2 of my 5 cars have been directed to STAR stations for their biannual smog testing.
So you 'friend' would not be an option if that is on your registration renewal.
There is an algorithm they use to choose cars/trucks for STAR smog. Mine were my 93 Camaro, and my 2000 Silverado Pick UP.
I'm not sure if you understand. My car has been chosen for the Star test since I bought it 4 years ago. I understand that cars are supposedly chosen by random, was a gross polluter or is a high emitter. It is very easy for a smog tech to pass your car. They would need your paperwork and they will also "pass" your car by using a similar car that can pass emissions. There is no way real way that the DMV knows whose car is on the machine. The only information is what the smog tech gives them regarding your car. Here's a link that you can learn more about smog tests and certain illegal ways to pass the test. http://www.smogtips.com/smogcheckfraud.cfm

That is true, but with the STAR system the shop is risking their entire business model to be your "friend." I had a discussion with the owner of a non STAR smog station last year, that was bemoaning the fact that California is giving debits to any station that has passed a car if it fails on the next biannual inspection done fully 2 years later! Enough debits and there goes your STAR status. Obviously if something happens in the intervening 2 years (stopped by inquisitive officer who looks and sees long tubes) then the STAR status would be revoked more quickly.
At any rate I have sold my only car with LTs to a friend in a state with better smog laws.
I appreciate your info on being chosen for the STAR inspection as that solidifies my feeling that older Corvettes will be in that algorithm more often than not.
