Default Slicks

I have an 86 and have went to 17 inch wheels. I am looking to mount slicks on the stock rims because I can not hook up at full throttle with the 315 17 in first gear. I have heard that you want a decent side wall on slicks. What size can you fit without rubbing?

......... 26 x 10.00 x 15 and 28 x 10.50 x 15 on 15 x 10 x 6.5 back spaced wheels ... you might still need to limit the up movement to avoid contact with the fender lip ... do this by extending the bump stops ........ Drag Radials generally are stickier than slicks , but they do like having sidewalls for flex ... you might want to try 275/50/15 Hoosiers ......

Exactly...... Is it a manual (stick shift)

I can easilly get traction with my supercharged engine, i mean part throttle to get it moving then flat to the floor. Try new sticky tires.

You may want to talk to 383vett, he runs 10 sec quarters and lifts the front wheels. He doesnt seem to have traction problems, with those drag race tires.

My motor is a 383 with about 390 RWHP 375rwtq. The problem is 1st gear it is 3.27 with my TKO 500 and makes it hard to launch.

I also have MAJOR difficulties hooking in my car on the track... 2.6 60' time is the best I could cut. Sat there scratching my head, wondering "wtf?". Read the DOT # on the tire; the damn things are the original 27 year old tires... probably rock hard and just sliming up on the track

A 15 in rim with a 275/50 or 275/60 provided they fit will more than handle that...got a good friend whos running 11s with a 235/60/15 MT on his '62
Do you have the std brakes or larger rotors?
Or just get a junk pair of fronts and put something with a biger sidewall on in a 17

Default Question

I happen to have a 86 so pardon the question/ignorance. I though there's no way to make a 15" wheel fit over the rotors. For those recommending running a 15" slick, are you removing or replacing the rotors or what?

Depend on the profile of the inner barrel of the wheel.

On mine I had to grind the fins off the top of the calipers for clearance. I have Billet Specialties Street Lites which have a reall small ID barrel.

All I had to do was grind the FINS of the calipers down a bit, took maybe 30 minutes per side. Nothing else was needed , stock rotors worked fine.

For 16" wheels, I'd take a look at the Hoosier quick time pro or bias ply ET streets. Both are available in a couple of sizes that should work.

..... On my '87 I used Weld 15 x 10 x 6.5 back space Pro Star Wheels ... Bolted them right on ... no interference with anything ................
