I've heard bad stories of changing sparkplugs. My neighbor took six hours changing them in his L98. Any advice will gladly accepted! Oh! And what type plugs do you recommend for a '93 LT1? or stay with the stock delcos? thanks you guys!
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (Blue 92)
my advice is - if it is in your way - REMOVE IT - the hour you spend removing these 'things' will make your life Sooo much better when you start doing the plugs, same advice for wires, don't even start until you remove every componet that is in your way :)
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (BrentDev)
One of the better ones I have heard is to remove the inner wheel liner/skirts. Supposedly that gives you some good access to some of them.
But the passenger side one all the way in the back! :mad That one will make you cuss!!!!! :cuss
It will make your life a whole lot simpler to do this... and have patience...... lots of it. Remember to use "neversieze" (anti-sieze or whatever the he** they call it) on the sparkplug threads and dielectric grease on the spark plug boots.... makes next time a lot better too.
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (GRNVNM93)
I just finished doing the plugs on my LT4. Must have taken my 6 - 7 hours. Numbers 6 and 8 are the killers. They are hard to break loose due to the strict space limitations. Hard to put any muscle on them. Once I got a socket and a ratchet drive on them, I used a medium length of pipe as a breaker bar to break them loose. From that point on you can use the ratchet and switch to using your hand very soon. Putting them back in, I put the plug in the socket and started them very carefully. Since they were coated with anti-seize, they go in much easier than they come out, and you can use your hands a lot more.
I agree with the previous post which says to remove as much stuff as you reasonably can without doing something totally rash. I'm doing the wires next, and am totally freaked out about that before I have even started the job. Good luck. :seeya
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (jkingsbury)
plugs are easy, it's the driver side wires that are a pain.
As far as new plugs go, I just put in NGk Tr55's. They seem to work fine and are only $2 each compared to $6-8 ea. for the Ac Delco's. The delco plugs I just pulled, which were only in the car for a year, many were already missing the pucks. I'll never use them again.
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (nickd)
This is one of the reasons why I like my L98 better than my LT1. There is only one tough one on the L98, the rest are a snap. I took one look at the LT 1 and said the hell with it.
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (mooncricket)
I suggest AC Delco Rapidfires.
BTW: The second generation Rapidfires are platinum and do have to be gapped!
And, I agree that the wires are harder than the plugs. I never tried to change my plugs before putting the long tubes on, so I don't know how hard they were originally. They aren't that bad now.
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (Thud)
Wires are pretty easy, and only take a couple of hours.... after you've removed the water pump, and the entire accessory bracket. :smash:
I didn't remove the bracket, but I did have to move the p/s pump out of the way. This was of course after I had already pulled the alt and a/c compressor.
Re: Any pointers on changing LT1 sparkplugs? (ZBRA)
If you can get the car up on a gas station type lift, it makes life very easy when you do the wires. The drivers side is the worst but can be done from underneath without removing anything. I did mine in about an hour. If you can't get a lift then in that case, your're stuck with the top route.
