Default 4+3 overdrive solenoid

This has probably been talked to death, but could use some reassurance if I'm on the right track, my overdrive stays on, almost all of the time, with the switch having no effect. Sometimes it functions as it should when first starting off, but still no switch control, I'm not thinking it's the switch but haven't tested it yet, have heard the relays fail, but being stuck on all the time, sometimes even when downshifted into first the big "O" light stays on, so I'm kinda thinking it's the overdrive solenoid stuck on...thoughts, I'll check out the relay and hopefully be able to check the switch function first before determining anything, where can you get the solenoid, or is it a dealer only item, do we have a write up here somewhere on it's replacement, I'm new to the forum, so taking a little while to learn to navigate here.
Thanks
Rich

eventually, once I get it sorted, I want to do the manual overdrive mod

Often times the insulation on the wires that go in the really pull back and expose the wires and they can touch. I have seen that numerous times.

There are tests that can be performed that take the relay out of the scenario...and see if ti will engage and disengage.

May need to call http://www.skspeed.com/

the relay is located under the hood, drivers side firewall between the brake booster and the valve cover, there are two relays one in front of the other, i think the OD relay is the rear but don't quote me on that

had the same problem with my 86 replaced the relay, no change
wires had come out of the plug and were bare but not touching each other yet
fixed that and no change

it was the wire on the bottom of the switch
disassemble, test switch, solder put everything back, works great

when tightening the nut that holds the switch to the bottom of the shifter i had it a little too far to the rear of the slot and it made the button rod bind up,
there is a happy middle spot for it to work just right that takes a bit to figure out

Thanks, haven't had time to look at it yet, crappy weather here, and outside under a cover, so have to wait for nice days, also had to repair what I think was some poor connections at the starter, wouldn't start for me the other day, unless I jumped it at the starter, just assumed corroded wires, but didn't appear to be that bad, cleaned them up any way, possibly the main wire needs replaced if it's corroded under the shielding, but added a temporary wire to the solenoid connection, ran it up top, in case I need to jump the solenoid again, last time was a pain, jacking up the car in the cold snow, having wife with foot on clutch and ignition on...tested my jumper wire, works like a second starter button, no more under the car unless no power to the starter from the main lead. More spring work, replace all battery cables. Sort out wiper problem, operating on high only, other than those little chores, she's cruise ready and reliable....shhhh, knock on wood it didn't hear me.
