Default Do I need more gear for my setup?

I can't help but think that 3.07 gears are just too doggy for my car and mods. I'm really thinking I need a set of 3.55's for the car. I dont want 4.10's because even though its my weekend warrior, I still want highway prowess... and I REALLY dont want to go much wider in the rear to handle the 4.10 gears. I've already accepted that I'll need more rubber this coming summer, but I'm not prepared to go even wider w/ having even more gear. I really think my car is being held back w/ 3.07's and cam-surge is a bitch sometimes.

What say ye educated Corvette folk?

With a 4+3 a 3.73 would work well with your combination.

You dont think that would put a hurting on me in the highway? With as little highway driving as I actually do... mostly country backroads/hills etc being that I live in ski-country.

Strangely, the 3.73's are cheaper than the 3.54's. Maybe its a sign

I have 3.75s in my 85 with a 4+3. Those gears are borderline streetable. Like 80 mph in fourth gear and overdrive is 3000 RPMs.

Interesting. I rarely go over the limit (65mph in NY) when on the highway unless I'm doing a high-speed blast... but I've noticed that w/ the doggy-*** 3.07 gears right around 3-4 gear there is a period of mega lag due to a huge cam that doesn't make power until after 3k rpms, and the gears being so steep (3.07's). I think more gear would also close up my ridiculous gap in gearing in 3-4 and 4-5 gear changes.

Outta curiosity what size tires do you run in the rear? Do you have problems hooking up at all when not trying to smoke the tires? I'm on a thin line right now w/ the stock 255's where they will hook up if I feather the throttle and ease on it, but anything harsh off the line has me real rear happy. I know w/ more gear I will without a DOUBT need wider rears.

Can't smoke the tires unless I dump the clutch. I have 315 Nitto nt 555r drag radials.

Interesting!!! Thats real good to know. So you can actually launch the car pretty decent then, or do you have to feather the throttle too?

I'm not really sure. I haven't tried launching it too much and when I do launch it I'm mostly using the 2 step. I know that I can't spin it at any RPM. My car makes about 345 rwtq at 3700 RPMs. At 3700 RPMs in first gear I cannot spin the tires.

I'd like to offer a suggestion, but I need more information. Give me some details on your motor and transmission.

Hmm not sure why it didn't show up for you. I copy/pasted it:

1987 Z51 4+3, Procomp heads 2.02 valves (capable of .650 lift) comp cams XR276HR 224/230; 110* lsa, ported intake/plenum, Hypertech diz, 355 full hydraulic motor, 1.6rr, 11.5:1 Speed Pro full-floats, 22lb injectors(?), adjustable FPR, LT's, straight pipe, short shifter, TBIchips tuning.
Spring of 2014: complete dyno tune by J&J Speed Shop.

My earlier motor was similar and I used 3.55s, but that was with an A4 and 2500 stall. YMMV

Just curious, what did your car put down on the dyno?

Look at your trap speed and dyno data. Select a gear/tire combination that will reach or exceed the hp peak at the expected trap speed in 4th gear.

Assuming you will trap in the vicinity of 107-110 mph with a 4500 rpm hp peak now (due to LTR intake), 3.07s should be about perfect with an 800-811 rev/mile tire.

If the car is slower, or if hp peak is greater than my assumption, you may benefit from a little more gear.

Cam surge will be worse with more gear.

You have the stock TPI intake still ?
If so, gears will not help you at all. Save your money and purchase an intake.
