I have pulled apart the headlight engine gears in my 85. The gears themselves look good but the metal pieces inside are worn. Does anyone know if you can get these little pieces separately or do you have to get the kit with the two replacement gears as well?
If you're talking about the black parts in the gears, those are rubber. They are shock absorbers that cushion the gears when the headlights slam up against the stops. Yours don't look too bad, but this is what the new gear and rubber pieces looked like when I replaced mine:
Oh ok, thanks Cliff. I thought the rubber pieces were maybe metal. I wonder if the sloppiness of them being worn cause the motor to stop. The headlight will open with a little touch and closes with no issues on it's own. The gears don't seem to have any flat spots or look worn but for the cost, I'm likely just as well to replace the whole gear then eh?
