I had some parts cleaner that I used in my 20 gallon parts washer when I rebuilt the lt1 years ago that worked great. Unfortunately I cannot remember what kind it was and the last stuff I bought was terrible. Any recommendations for a water based solution that is strong enough to clean gunked up engine parts?
I recently saw this stuff on velocity channel. It looked really interesting. Has packets with grease eating bacteria or something to that effect. The parts washer they make also looked really interesting... until I saw the price. Ouch!
I remember decades ago when it was possible to go to a Chevron station and purchase a quantity of solvent. I don't know what was in that stuff or how carcinogenic it was, but it sure worked well in parts washers
back in the 60's, seems to me, I remember Stoddard solvent used in parts washers. that was a long time ago, and I may be out in left field here. I have no idea, if someone can still buy it for home use. Stoddard solvent is a commercial name for mineral or white spirits. http://hazard.com/msds/mf/baker/baker/files/s6588.htm

I've used "Ozzy Clean" "Smart Washer" stuff a few years back as part of a DoD contract. It was crap as far as heavy automotive use goes. Thankfully after a year of complaining the contract wasn't renewed.
