Default C4 heads... repair or replace?

I need to machine the heads, exhaust leaks and lower performance due to a heat issue (you can elaborate). I am looking at the AFR heads since I will have to spend the money one way or the other, I also want to upgrade a few things, any suggestions? Any advice on the heads?

What (if any) performance goals do you have in mind for the car? What are the upgrades you want to do?

All that can make a difference in the choice of heads to use along with the costs. Have you taken the stock heads to a machine shop to see if they can be milled? Have them pressure tested to makes sure there are no cracks.

I just figured, if it cost me $1000 to have them milled (that's the quote from several mechanics) then why not spend a bit more for the AFT heads. I plan on strengthening the engine, the mechanics. Many things have been done already, 50k on the engine and transmission now. I'm adding some spark plug wires, they used unshielded when I bought it, also changing the serpentine belt. I did see someone with an air intake that looked interesting as well.

The car looks great, but the mileage went from 23mpg on the freeway to about 14. The overheat was done when my wife drove the car to work, and it was very hot out, then the traffic went to 25 mph, for miles. The thermostat went bad.

We want to take it on drives to the coast, up to Tahoe, etc.

It was supposed to be my car, but she loves it, although she prefers the C3 Stingray, so I will go that direction for her soon and probably keep this one. Lot's of compliments on it. I'm also looking for F and R emblems, etc. It will look nice. I have a hard top to go with it as well, and that makes it look really nice.
