Default Shifting question

Hey all, have a stupid question for all of you. So I tried Putting my 85 automatic in 1 low today and noticed that it doesn't lock into 1 low, 2, and d. It does lock into drive with overdrive though. Is this what it's supposed to be like? Or is there something wrong with my shifter?

Going from R to N does not require a button push.
Going from D to 2 does not require a button push.
Going from 2 to 1 does not require a button push.

Going from 1 to 2 does not require a button push.
Going from 2 to D does not require a button push.
Going from D to OD does not require a button push.
Going from OD to N does not require a button push.

You should have to push the button down to shift from P to R.
You should have to push the button down to go from N to R.
You should have to push the button down to go from OD to D.

...Unless you do this mod (cut away the crosshatched area on the sector). Doing the mod will allow you to go from R directly to D just by pulling back on the shift lever):

That picture shows you why you need to push the button (or not) when going between gears. There is a spring loaded pawl that drops into the notches in the sector. Once it's in the notch you have to push the button to get it to release. 1st is on the far left, followed by 2nd. D is the crosshatched area and OD and Neutral are on the right side of the notch. There is a similar notch for Park (out of the picture on the right).

Sometimes if the shift boot is very stiff or bunched up it will push the shifter out of 1 and into 2 or, in extreme cases, not allow you to shift into 1 at all.

Thank you so much, you really cleared up my confusion and worries. Thanks again for the help!
