Sorry if the answer is out there I tried several searches but none dealt with what I need to know. I just acquired a 84 and was told the pump was bad. I have pulled the sending unit and of course after 8 years of sitting its in bad shape. But of course i have no desire to purchase a new $250 unit! I can repair the sender, and media blast the unit, but there is what appears to be a capacitor or condenser in line with the positive side of the fuel pump. It has disintegrated and I have no idea what its purpose is. Right now I need the car to run so I can move it to my shop. My trailer is way to high and ramps to short to load the vette. So what is the capacitor/ condenser? And can i just bypass it temporarily?
That is known as a "pulsator". It's purpose is supposedly to prevent hammer in the fuel lines caused by the pulsing of the injectors.
If your "capacitor" is cylindrical, it's probably standard rubber fuel line. That has a fuel-resistance lining but the outside is NOT fuel resistant and turns to mush over time. You can bypass it temporarily with standard rubber fuel line but should replace it with SUBMERSIBLE fuel line for long term use. This is the stuff you need:
