Default 700r4 trans replace or rebuild?

Last weekend I bought an 84 corvette with a bad tranny.(got it cheap) I have to replace the tranny and I'm not sure what to look for. I've see one from an 85 Camaro for sale(will it work?) The CFI on the vette has been converted to carb if that makes any difference. What I really need to know which years and models of GM trannys will fit my vette or should I just pull it out and get it rebuilt? Any and all help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your C4 trans is different than the Camaro . Both are 700R4s but the tail shaft is different. Also if you plan on using your old torque converter you need to check if you have a 27 of 30 spline input shaft. They used both in 1984. I would have yours rebuilt

The internals are also different in the valve body. You can identify a Corvette 700r4 because it has a large V cast into the bell housing:

It is possible to swap the tail shaft housing. The Corvette housing is unique because the C beam bolts to it (Corvette on the left):

As you can see the tail shaft housing is shorter on the Corvette. You will need to cut off the end of the output shaft to match.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to pull the tranny and have it rebuilt. Spending a little more money now will probably save me money in the long run .

I did my 84 700r4 my self, original trans and no "V" mark.
(Confirmed with out a doubt it's the one that came with the car)

I ended putting nearly 1k in parts alone, but i upgraded everything...

There are some issues in the early trans, make sure they pay special attention to the planatary gear sets, later hard parts are a direct drop in (4l60e and 4l65e).

I have the front and rear sprag assy from a late model 700r4, front and rear planatary gearsets including the carrier from a 2004 4l65...

I built mine for hp, but it also fixed many oiling issues...

I'd look for a later vette 700r4 to get rebuilt. Much improved parts were developed over the years. They're not that hard to find.

I don't know why an 18 month old thread was resurrected for the comment regarding the '84 build of "Gibbles" but it would seem NOT a wise move to build an earlier that didn't have the AUX V-Body. Economics I'd think pretty much dictate using the later core.

Maybe it was a "it's what I had so I did it"!
