Definitely a U-joint. That picture is a bit confusing, but what is referred to as the bearing and bearing cup is really the u joint. Anyway it is too bad it wasn't replaced when the drive shaft was out. Taking out the drive shaft can be a royal PITA and u-joints can be bought at any parts house.

I doubt that it's the u-joint that they were referencing but maybe the transmission extension bushing. You don't mention which transmission so it's very likely that they coulld have had issues in an attempt to locate the correct bushing.
Which transmission do you have? A4, M6 or an older 4 + 3?
Are you thinking of the rear transmission bush?
I know there is a bit of play between the yoke and the bush in the transmission extension housing, that is normal it did concern me at first many years ago but was told it was normal.
Has not given me any trouble.
I know my tail shaft / drive shaft yoke has a ring around it that looks like a ballancer, that is on tight and doesn't move. It could be mistaken as a bearing.

OP never mentioned if the car is an A4 or what BUT yes I believe that the dampener on the front slip yoke could maybe mistakenly or "jokingly" referred to as a drive-shaft bearing. OP hasn't been back either.

Sorry been busy.Yup that's what it is. Car is a 94 with an automatic. I guess it's used to balance the shaft. It's wore out and moving around about half an inch.
