Hey Everyone!

I'm new to this forum, and I'm looking forward to learning a lot from everyone.

Here's what I have. I have a 1980 Camaro, with a 1986 Corvette 350, and the 700-R4. The only upgrades it currently has is a full exhaust, and 3.73 gears, and burned the chip.

I am currently getting my lower intake, and plenum ported. So, here is my question. I am looking to upgrade my cam and heads. I want to keep the TPI intake and amplify my torque. What cams and heads have you guys ran, and have had good results?

Also, what other tips and tricks have you guys done. I'm looking to add small parts to create a whole. Not just upgrade one part and expect a whole new world.

For example, how about adding the airfoil to the throttle body? Should I step up to a 52mm, or keep it at 48mm for now?

Also, is it worth doing the throttle body coolant bypass?

I'm a younger guy, and never had any car experiences growing up. So, I'm trying to learn all this on my own. I greatly appreciate any information that you can provide. If you need me to answer any questions, please feel free to ask!

torque is easy with an L98... You already have 19" runners, that's the first step...

I am trying to remember the recipe for more torque... Callaway used twin turbos... and by the time 1991 came around, the torque was insane, over 600 ft-lbs.

Although I have not done this, I have read a bunch of good things about going to Vortec heads with a Vortec baseplate on the L98 motors. (see links below) There have been several threads on our forum that talk about this modification.

It might be a pretty good bang for the buck since you are talking about replacing heads and doing manifold porting. This may make a bolt on with better results than tweaking your stock parts.

I don't have a specific cam choice since there are so many to choose from, but I expect you will get more feedback and a lot of opinions from others.

The airfoil is worth very little if anything and is generally discouraged.

The throttle body coolant bypass also does very little, but it is virtually free if you want to try it.

The bigger throttle body can help on a pretty modified motor, but at stock or slightly modified motors there is not too much gain.

Good luck.

Full length headers, AFR heads, fuel injectors, rebuilt trans. Not sure what rear end you have but if it is the 7.625 GM, you are aware it is the weak point. I suggest for fuel injectors size be recommended by the tuner as the cam and head. I'd get someone who is reputable and does a dyno tune as opposed to the "mail order guess a tune".

aklim has it right with full length headers. The stock manifolds are pretty bad.

I have the 8.5" 10-bolt GM "Corporate" rear. With it being an '80 Camaro, finding drive train parts are fairly easy.

I was thinking about going with the vortec base-plate, and vortec heads. I'd hate to pay over $400 for the lower manifold, but it comes out cheaper than buying new heads, and the money I save will go twords the cam. I have read elsewhere that the vortec heads are good for around 30hp, just by themselves. Whether or not that is true, I'm not sure, but I think it is a good start.

The only reason I gave the coolant bypass any thought is because it is practically free, and I'm sure that any cooler air will help, even if only marginally.

Thanks for the quick replys guys, I'm excited to be here, and read and learn!

I have full length heddman headers, to highflow cats, and dynomax mufflers. That was one of the first things we did when we did the engine swap.
