Default 84 heater control valve

Since the weather is nice this weekend, I decided it was a good time to get the heater control valve out of the 84. Have to decide what to do with the head gaskets being bad still, but any way this thing was leaking so it had to come out.

It leaks around the screw that holds the swivel arm, and its rusted around the screw.

In fact the screw fell out nothing to hold it.

Im going to take it apart and investigate a repair. Not that Im really hopeful.

Most peop1e say dont bother with a used one, new is over $140 or close to at leas that much.

Somewhere I read a thread where just the insides were replaced with parts from a new less expensive one.

Someone else said he used a cheaper one by itself and some hoses.

That sounds good to me it is not easy wriggling that thing in or out of there. Hoses gave me enough of a darn fit.

I did ask that person how exactly he hooked it up but no response.

Wonder if I can implement this one?http://www.ebay.com/itm/221631389417?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Please anyone who knows I could sure use some help.

Thank you

I got the old one apart and all I found inside was a small piece of the old cylindrical valve. I guess its all been ground to dust in the water pump or something.

So this one looks tempting more and more. Easier to get in there too.

Does anyone have any idea why it may not be suitable?

Since yours is disassembled you might want to check out this approach. The thread is a few years old for the '85 - '87. The valve you mention could work but you need to confirm the operation is consistent with what you've removed ie. vacuum opens or closes?

Yeah but where you live, heat always on is a necessity!

I just purchased a control valve (Everco 74800) which fits early Chevy full size with the gauge package Its the 4 port one. Without gauges is only a 3 port. I plan to remove my control valve and try and remove the insides and replace them with the new stuff from the Everco one. If something happens to the old one I will try and adapt the Everco to the Vette controls. The vac line isnt a big deal and I would think that proper placement with different length of heater hose will be all thats needed. The new control valve should be in this week and I will tackle it this weekend.

The link that WVZR1 will be my guide to this process.

I did exactly what Agent 86 did, (he's a wealth of good info). Now everyone asks when
the hood is up, "Whats the golf tee for?" in the vacuum line.

I took mine apart and fixed it with the gut from the impala valve. Around $20.
Wasn't hard at all. Look for the instructions posted. Cleaning the 25 years worth of crud out of the old part and painting it will take most of the time.

OP, I just checked your eBay link and it is not the correct valve you need Looks like that one fits Chrysler products.

This is the correct valve you need.

RockAuto.com has the Four Seasons (PN 74800) version of that valve on closeout for $12.28.

I removed all of that valve/metal plumbing assy and replaced it with the valve above and heater hose. It routes the same and I've had ZERO issues making the change over. Here's my setup:

I believe the OP was "just wondering" or maybe "wandering" BUT she has an '84 and the '85 - '87 solution/fix isn't I don't believe a viable option. Is it? I don't believe I've ever seen it mentioned. I directed her towards the modification/cannibalization thread because she mentioned she had torn hers apart.

The OP needs the help likely from someone that has "successfully" used an other than OE for an '84.
