Default Changing automatic shift boot

Hey all, just a quick question for you. I Just got a new shift boot for my '85 and was wondering if I had to take the entire instrument cluster out just to change the boot. I know I have to take off the trim around it, but do I have to take out the whole assembly? Thanks for any tips on this project, Mike.

not sure why you would think you need to take out the instrument cluster - ??? off the top of my head, you may need to remove the screws holding the IP bezel, radio bezel, and maybe, some of the center armrest assembly.

Like Joe said the world doesn't need to be taken apart.
first remove the shifter button, use a small screwdriver or hooked trans pick it comes straight up. once you have the button out make sure you have the button retainer clip accounted for, it may be in the button or still wrapped around shifter lock rod. you will need a small snap ring plier to remove the shift ****, be careful the snap rings like to fly.

remove the two screws in the corner of were the console and dash meet, remove all the screws that attach console plate to console. I recommend you remove the remainder of the screws that retain the radio / a/c control bezel and remove it or maneuver the console plate out.

it sounds like a lot but it is not all said and done 20 or so minutes.

replace your boot reassemble in reverse make sure when reinstalling to reconnect the cigarette lighter & shifter light, make sure that the indicator is engaged in it's slot. (been their done that) before tightening all the screws make sure all the bezels and covers that were touched are settled in and NOT under tension you don't want over tighten, pop in your shifter button.

Happy car Happy owner

I didn't have to remove the radio bezel on my 89..I just removed the bottom 2 screws , then loosened the others..When you lift the end of the center console bezel the 2 tabs under the radio bezel slide right out ...WW
