Default 96 LT1 Timing Chain and gears

I'm replacing my 96 LT1 timing gears and chain. The 96 has the long
dowel pin in the Cam and getting the old timing chain and gears off was not easy. Now I'm installing the new gears and chain. I have the dots lined up as required and cannot get the cam gear to go onto the dowel pin. I have done all that I know to do and it will not go on.
Anyone out there done this before ? Is there some trick or procedure
I don't know about. HELP

without trying to put the chain and upper sprocket on together as an unit (yet) just try to put the bare upper sprocket onto the cam. does it go on ? was the dowel bent or buggered up when the original sprocket was removed?

Yes I tried the cam gear without the chain. It is the right one and goes on very easy. The dowel is not bent or buggered up. The pin is very close to going in, but seems the chain needs to be stretched a little to fit.

try moving the bottom sprocket forward (towards the end of the crank snout) a bit; place the timing chain around the two sprockets, and now begin to seat the upper sprocket over the pin; once started, move the two sprockets and chain rearward as an unit.

Not enough hands or room. The crankshaft sprocket has to tapped on and takes several minutes. Im doing this while the engine is still in the Car. Maybe the cam has to be moved some and then turned into place once the gear is on the pin.
